Many Things

I've become mildly obsessed with foreign words that have no direct translation into English. There are some fantastic words that need to be integrated into our language. I've definitely found some new song titles!

A few of my favorites are:

Toska
Russian – Vladmir Nabokov describes it best: “No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody or something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.”

Saudade
Language: Portuguese
Meaning: Melancholic longing or nostalgia for a person, place or thing that is far away from you.

Litost
Language: Czech
Meaning: A feeling that synthesizes grief, sympathy, remorse and longing.

Mangata
Language: Swedish
Meaning: The glimmering, road-like reflection that the moon creates on the water.

Tartle (Scots)
The nearly onomatopoeic word for that panicky hesitation just before you have to introduce someone whose name you can't quite remember.

Cafune (Brazilian Portuguese)
Leave it to the Brazilians to come up with a word for “tenderly running your fingers through your lover’s hair.”
Duende
Spanish – While originally used to describe a mythical, spritelike entity that possesses humans and creates the feeling of awe of one’s surroundings in nature, its meaning has transitioned into referring to “the mysterious power that a work of art has to deeply move a person.”

Okay there are a lot, here are the links:

I'm basically listening to two songs on a loop right now, East of Eden by Zella Day and The Driver by Bastille. Go listen to/buy them immediately.

I've had a cold for the past week, so I haven't been able to sing at all. This cold stole my low notes and threw off my pitch, very sad. But the music is returning, thank goodness.

I also got a kitty last week (on National Cat Day, coincidentally). She lives at my aunt's house, about five minutes away. So far she doesn't have a name, although we've been calling her Queek (Squeak). She is insane and I have various claw marks all over my hands and arms, but I love her.

Music

I've recently found some songs that I absolutely love. Here are a few, they're all great for writing, and I think Illuminated is (maybe) my favorite out of these. But then, my favorite writing song changes from week to week or day to day. Have fun! Write things! Enjoy it!

Mashup

I have discovered this extremely awesome mashup of Counting Stars by OneRepublic and Timber by Ke$ha. Definitely one of the best mashups I've been able to find. Enjoy!

Song Of The Day - January 1st

Belle Vie by Immediate Music is the song I keep coming back to today. This one is perfect for writing emotional and/or happy scenes. It's such an awesome song, I've listened to it so many times but it never gets old. I just wish it was longer!

If the video doesn't work: Belle Vie

Audiomachine

Audiomachine has some of the best instrumental music I've been able to find. Here are a few of my favorite songs (aka songs I can listen to over and over again while writing because they are perfect for whatever the scene may be).

Those are just my top ten, just search youtube for Audiomachine and you're sure to find something awesome. I hope the links work/are accurate.

Curing Writer's Block

I often find myself plagued by writer's block. Anyone who writes anything knows this pain. It os a horrible horrible thing. You have a million ideas but you simply cannot put then down on paper. So I've decided to post my list of things that usually work for me when I can't write exactly what I want.

  • Skip Ahead. Go forward five or ten or twenty chapters and write something from the middle of the story. A scene you know you want, an even that needs to happen, even the ending!
  • Listen to music/switch what you're listening to. I find that music can be a massive inspiration, so find something that fits the scene/story and crank up the volume (but don't go deaf 'kay?). Two Steps from Hell and Thomas Bergersen (all instrumental) are a couple of my favorites. There are a lot of random songs that always make me feel more author-y too, I shall make a post about them some other time.
  • Eat something. Come on, awesome food makes everything better! Can also help when writing a dinner scene etc.
  • Write something else. Start a sequel, write a short story, start something completely new, it doesn't matter. Just try writing something other than whatever is driving you crazy and you might actually get some writing done.
Hey look, the first letters spell out SLEW. So there's a slew of the things that help me the most.  If I think of anything else, I'll post that later.

Oh I can't forget one of my favorites.... listen to this Binaural Beats track. I don't know if it works for anyone else but I love it to death. Maybe it's all in my head, but I swear it helps me concentrate on my writing.

So I figured I might as well post my cover of Adele's 'Skyfall'. Eek. Feedback is appreciated. :)

My iTunes Library

Can someone please explain why, why in the name of heaven, is Who Says by Selena Gomez my number one most played song? There’s just no way I played that song 173 times. I must have left the computer on overnight with it on a loop, yes, that would explain it. If not, I think I need some serious counseling.

On the other hand, Song for Jesse from The Assassination of Jesse James is my number two, and that song is amazing. Everyone should hear it at least... 81 times.
